Our Top 10 Favorite Amazon Lodges – Mystical, unique and larger than life, there are few places in the world as captivating as the Amazon. Covering more than 2 million square miles in South America and spanning nine countries, the Amazon tropical rainforest is the largest and most biodiverse of its kind in the world. In fact, it’s estimated that at least 10 percent of the world’s species can be found here, but perhaps as many as 30 percent. And, that’s just the rainforest!

The larger Amazon River Basin is roughly the size of the lower 48 U.S. states and, although it often is discussed as one cohesive ecosystem, it actually is incredibly variable with highly complex  and diverse rainforest networks, as well as savannas, flooded forests, seasonal forests and even deciduous forests situated around the world’s second longest and most voluminous river— the mighty Amazon.

This river system, with more than 1,000 tributaries, is the lifeblood of the basin, but the whole fragile and interdependent ecosystem has been threatened for years due to deforestation and global climate change. Fortunately, the rate of deforestation has slowed and many Amazon lodges have joined the fight to preserve this spectacular region, which scientists believe has existed more than 55 million years. Cristalino Lodge, Brazil

Situated at 1,000-1,500 feet above sea level in southern Brazil and accessible only via the River Cristalino, this ecolodge has been named one of the Top 25 Ecolodges in the World by National Geographic and is truly unique to the Amazon. The accommodations are designed in a way that brings the outside in, allowing visitors here to really commune with nature. And this part of the Amazon has some very unique natural characteristics. Not only are there several species found only here, but this location is one of the few where rivers don’t generally flood the forest, creating a space for evergreen forests with tall, old growth trees you don’t want to miss.

Juma Lodge, Brazil

La Selva Amazon Ecolodge & Spa, Ecuador
